I came across this magnificent graphic in this report by the consulting group McKinsey. It is one of those facts that you think you know but have not any way internalised. Of course my car sits idle for the majority of the time but when someone puts it in a graphic such as this it is even more confronting. However, I wont be rushing out to catch public transport anytime soon.
That is a pretty amazing set of stats. I agree with you, I am still not riding to work tomorrow or spending two hours on public transport when I can drive 25 minutes.
I hadn’t realised just how inefficient a use of finite resources it was.

For the cause of helping to boost the productivity / optimization of existing resources – I am prepared to make the personal sacrifice of sharing the use of your car Chris, when I’m next in Melbourne instead of hiring one.
I just hope that your hotrod has a (Mc) hamburger holder because without one I always end up spreading the slimy stuff all over the seats.
Disappointed there’s no acknowledgement for racing the engine to listen to my glorious V8 at wide open throttle…
